For $500, its decent, but the quality level is poor. The display is abysmal, with a viewing angle of a cheap digital camera display. The blacks look blue when you move your head more than an inch in either direction from dead center. I suppose it is relatively sharp, but that’s about it. The touch pad is just awful–as is the click pad beneath it. Both are either unresponsive, or clunky feeling (click pad). However, the keyboard is definitely good and feels tactile and responsive. The sound ‘quality’ haha…is a joke. Its hallow sounding and practically useless, I would use headphones instead. There are plenty of ports and they are located well. The battery doesn’t come near the 4.5 hours quoted in the description.

The bottom line is the physical laptop just feels cheap and is not at all enjoyable. From the clickpad being clunky and plastic feeling, to the sticky opening of the display.

I would not recommend this laptop, even in this price range there are better options.

Author: Rainco

I recently had dinner with a friend who lamented about how her laptop was sent for repairs five times in the last two years. She was very surprised when I told her that I’ve owned three laptops in six years that have never needed repairs, all of which remain perfectly serviceable today.

Personally, I was surprised that it is possible to encounter so many problems with a laptop in the first place. Things became clearer after I heard exactly what happened. I racked my brains, and came up with a list of what I hope will be useful tips to help prolong the life of your acer laptop battery.

Battery Conditioning Not Needed

A common mistake I’ve seen would be unplugging the laptop when using it, connecting it back to the AC only when the charge in the battery is running out. The logic behind this is to prevent overcharging, though this is a bad decision based on flawed information. The result is a shortened serviceable life span of the battery, since there are a finite number of charge-discharge cycles inherent to every rechargeable apple laptop battery.

You see, computer makers are much more worried about overcharging than users, given the comparatively volatile nature of modern lithium-ion batteries. In fact, lithium-ion batteries have “undercharge” protection, too, and are designed to permanently refuse to charge if the power level falls too low. This is because they have a tendency to catch fire if charged under such circumstances. So this is a good reason to keep your HP laptop batteries fully charged instead.

Hear a Buzzing Sound? Don’t Wait for it to Go Away

If you hear a loud, buzzing or whining sound emanating from your laptop, send it for service at your earliest convenience. There are only two main moving components in your laptop capable of generating buzzing or whining noises – the built-in ventilation fan or the hard-disk drive. Generally speaking, any noise coming from them speaks of impending failure of those parts. Waiting for the sounds to go away is just asking for trouble. You’ll probably either lose data through an untimely hard-disk crash or some component will burn out irreparably if the laptop fan stops working. So back up your data in both cases, and send the laptop in for service.

Get a Keyboard Protector or Use an External Keyboard

The keyboard gets the heaviest physical wear on the laptop. While designed for heavy use, the keyboard usually cannot be replaced if damaged and is a usability nightmare if not properly maintained. Because laptops are often used around and mouse at my workstation at home, food, crumbs and other bits and pieces such as staple bullets often accumulate under the keys.

A keyboard protector will help keep out all that stray matter. To reduce wear on the keys, I would advocate using a separate keyboard when at your desk. I personally have a keyboard protector for my laptop, and use an external wireless keyboard.

Defragment Your Drives Regularly (or Not)

Due to the way the computer file system works, performance of hard-disk drives unavoidably will decrease over months or years of use. As such, it is often a good idea to perform a defragmentation of your data from time to time. Having said that, do note that defragmenting solid-state disks (SSDs) is detrimental and can shorten their usable life span. Newer operating systems such as Microsoft 7 recognize this and take away the option to defragment an SSD accordingly; this is not necessarily the case for all OSes, though.

Avoid Walking Around with the Laptop

Most laptops still come with hard-disk drives, which spin between 4,200 rounds per minute (rpm) to 7,200 rpm for higher-end models. Most users are not aware, but the hard-disk head hovers at microscopic distances – less than the width of a hair, to be precise — from the furiously spinning disk surface. So while technology has advanced significantly to eliminate the possibility of damage from casual handling, it is generally not a good habit to tuck your laptop under your arm while it is still switched on.

Your mileage might vary on this, as some laptops come with built-in software that will temporarily “park” the head away from the spinning surface when movement is detected. Regardless of that, gentle handling of your laptop is recommended.

Note: This advice does not apply to solid-state drives, which have no moving parts

Power Off Properly

One way to quickly shorten the life or even kill your laptop would be to stuff it into your bag when it is still switched on. While this is not something that most folks will do deliberately, accidents happen when users click on “Shut Down,” then stuff the laptop into the bag without waiting.

Applications or the Windows operating system itself can hang during the power-down process, which in this instance will leave the laptop running for hours in an enclosed bag until the power drains completely. And yes, I’ve heard of at least one case in which the hard-disk drive burned out after being subjected to a few doses of this treatment. So do check to make sure your laptop’s really powered off first.

Servicing Your Laptop? Let IT Have a Look at it

A visit to the service center typically entails a tedious process of backing up one’s data, and then waiting for anything ranging to days or weeks for the repairs to be completed. Now, it’s hardly a perfect world out there, and there’s always the chance that repairs might not be done satisfactorily. Just as it’s possible that repair personnel might opt to replace a part when they are not technically obligated to do so, the possibility exists that new problems could be introduced as a result of inexperience.

It’s always a good idea to let your service help desk or someone who is tech savvy take a look at your laptop to make a preliminary diagnosis. This will allow new problems that are introduced as a result of the service call to be more easily isolated and identified should they surface after the repair.

Toshiba Notebook billig

from: Mistiques Blog
Lishas Weblog

The Lenovo ThinkPad X301 Laptop Computer. It’s tough, thin, and light. In fact, at only 3.16 pounds, you won’t find a more impressive combination of power and portability. Style-wise, the Lenovo ThinkPad X301 is closer to the size of an actual paper notebook than a ThinkPad notebook has ever been. With its extremely thin (0.73″) design highlighted by a brilliant new 13.3-inch WXGA+ display with backlit LED panel, the ThinkPad X301 is the ultimate Lenovo laptop computer. And it offers numerous design flourishes including an integrated camera and digital microphone, a full-size ergonomic keyboard, ThinkLight®, Trackpoint®, UltraNav®, Integrated Fingerprint Reader, and stereo speakers.

Everyone wants to cater to the expanding 3D market and here’s Lenovo, out with their 3D-enabled notebook. The Y560d is their first attempt in 3D that comes with a 15.6-inch 3D screen, polarized glasses and software from TriDef that will help to convert 2D content to 3D.

Powering this notebook will be choices of CPU that goes up to Core i7, up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, up to 750GB HDD or SSD, ATI Radeon HD5730 1GB GPU, JBL-designed speakers, Dolby Home Theater support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI-out and optional Blu-ray drive.

The Y560d will be available by end of June with price starting from $1,199.99.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d: Multimedia Laptop Goes 3D

The 3D laptops keep rolling out. This time from Lenovo, who's outfitted the IdeaPad Y560 notebook with an extra dimension in the Y560d. It's got the same Core i7 goodness, a 15.6-inch (1366×768) display, and starts at $1200. Not shabby!

Of course, you'll have to upgrade if you want that Core i7, ATI Radeon HD5730 1GB graphics, or 750GB hard drive; the starting price sticks you with a still decent Core i3 processor, Intel's not-so-great integrated graphics, and a 250GB hard drive. Even the 3D panel, software, and glasses are extra options, meaning that it's going to quite a bit more to outfit the Y560d for a full 3D multimedia experience.

It also would've been nice to see 3D Blu-ray compatibility and Nvidia Optimus technology for easy graphics switching. While there's not much 3D Blu-ray content to choose from currently, it'd be nice to be a little more future-rpoof.

Still: it's early days for 3D laptops, and everyone's still figuring out what exactly consumers want—including consumers. If it's a relatively affordable 3D multimedia notebook that can be tricked out to the gills, the Y560d might just be onto something.

Lenovo Delivers on the Three D's with its First 3D Laptop; Dynamic, Dazzling and Dramatic

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – June 17, 2010: Lenovo (HKSE: 0992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d, the company's first multimedia laptop with a 3D display. The Y560d features the TriDef® 3D technology solution, which includes a 3D screen, software and glasses 1, so users can experience the unique sensation of visual immersion within their favorite movies, pictures and games.

“Fun is a notebook that brings multimedia to life-and the IdeaPad Y560d does this in a dramatic fashion with a truly unique 3D viewing experience,” said Dion Weisler, vice president, business operations, Lenovo. “While 3D technology has been around for ages, it has not been readily accessible to consumers within the home. Lenovo is helping bridge this gap by delivering consumers a 3D experience on a familiar PC platform that can be viewed and enjoyed when and where they want.”

The 15.6-inch Y560d 3D-enabled multimedia laptop, with its High-Def 16:9 widescreen and polarizer glasses, provides the optimal 3-dimensional experience when combined with compatible 3D movies and games.

With TriDef® 3-D technology, users can also experience 3D on their standard 2D videos and photos. The TriDef Media Player transforms a standard movie into a 3D experience 2. Photos take on a whole new life, thanks to the TriDef Photo Transformer that turns standard photos into eye-popping 3D.

The Y560d laptop includes Lenovo's new innovative Enhanced Experience RapidDrive technology, which seamlessly combines SSD and HDD storage solutions to deliver even faster Windows 7 boot-up times and significantly improve application performance3. Lenovo Enhanced Experience for Windows 7 is a unique Lenovo certification that delivers an optimized boot-up and shutdown process, rich multimedia capabilities and easy system maintenance tools. With RapidDrive technology, users can experience Windows 7 boot up 66% faster4, start favorite applications two-times faster5, and copy files within the computer in less than half the time6. The Y560d can be configured with up to 8GB DDR3 memory and up to 750BG HDD storage so users don't have to worry about running out of hard drive capacity when saving their favorite movies, music and games.

The Y560d will be available with JBL-designed speakers and Dolby® Home Theater™ surround sound – perfect for enjoying music and movies. Powered with up to an Intel Core™ i7 processor featuring Intel Turbo Boost Technology7 for delivering extra GHz when you need it, and the latest high-performance ATI Radeon™ HD5730 1GB graphics card, the Y560d is more than capable of running the latest games. With Switchable Graphics, users can toggle between performance and energy-saving modes for extended battery life. The laptop also includes an optional Blu-ray Disc™ drive, HD graphics support and an HDMI output for connecting to other HD devices such as a TV or gaming console2.

Additional features on the Y560d include SlideNav – an intelligent touch-sensitive slide bar application for easy desktop navigation; OneKey Theater II for optimized video playback; and an Ambient Light Sensor that automatically adjusts the PC screen brightness based on the user's distance from the display. For staying connected while on the move, the Y560d also comes with optional high-speed integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

One of the main parts of any wedding package is time. The amount of time your photographer is willing to spend at your wedding may vary. Some photographers may offer 5 to 10 hours, while others will stay from start to finish. It usually takes an average of eight hours to cover a wedding and get all the needed shots. If you think you have more time then you need for the day of your wedding see if your photographer will let you cut up that time. Ask if they will come and take pictures at the rehearsal dinner or practice ceremony in exchange for some of the extra hours on the wedding day.

You are paying the photographer, so you decide when the clock starts. If you want your photographer to be there early to get pictures of you getting ready, keep in mind that this will shave some time off your reception. So plan important events accordingly. A photographer's overtime rate can be outrageous so be careful.

With the digital age upon us and photographers using less and less film, the issue of film is starting to change. A digital wedding photographer has no real cost involved in taking pictures because he doesn't have to think about cost involved with film. This way they can snap as many pictures as they want and not charge you extra. Most normal sized weddings will result in at least 500 quality shots. Larger events will produce upwards of a thousand prints.

If you can't find a digital photographer try and find one that offers an unlimited number of rolls. This way you don't have to worry about your photographer missing once-in-a-lifetime shots. If you are planning your wedding on a budget you will want to sit down and make a list of shots you want. This way the photographer will only be taking the pictures you want them too.

Black and white film is definitely becoming the trend in wedding photography these days. Some photographers will try to trick you, saying that they offer black and white film but what they are really doing is having black and white prints made from color film. This saves the photographer a lot of money and most people don't realize this till after it's too late. Black and white prints made from color film lack the contrast and artistic flare of true black and white film.

Even if you think you only want black and white pictures, it's a good idea to throw in a few rolls of color for some extra bucks. You are going to want your formal family pictures in color. If you have a lavishly decorated wedding you will also want some color to capture all the painstaking detail of your wedding.

Most people like to have formals blown up to larger wall prints. If you are planning on getting this done you will want to make sure that your photographer is using a medium format camera and not a 35mm camera. Most experienced wedding photographers carry this gear but if you are on a budget your photographer may not use this gear. The reason for this is because medium format cameras use larger film, which means a larger negative, which means better quality enlargements.

WHAT ABOUT PROOFS?

In about a month or less you should hear back from your photographer and be getting your proofs or contact sheet. A contact sheet will be several notebook size sheets of small thumbnail photos. You will usually only see these in black and white because true black and white film is expensive to print.

Proofs are small 4×6 prints that are cheap and quick to print. These are great for figuring out what picture you want reprints of and ones that you want enlarged.

Who is going to keep your proofs is something that you will want to find out about up front. Some photographers will hold on to your proofs for samples, some will include them in the packages, or just throw them away. Most photographers will sell the proofs out right or they will require that you buy a certain amount of pictures before they give you the proofs.

CHOOSING THE AMOUNT PRINTS

The number of prints in your package is one of the biggest factors in choosing the right package. You don't want to spend money on prints that are going to gather dust in the closet but you also don't want to not order enough for friends and family.

Trying to determine the number of prints you are going to want is hard to do. It is a common misconception that you will only need a few extra in addition to the number of pages in your album. But just because your album has 20 pages doesn't mean you will only need 20 pictures. Some albums have more than one picture per

page. If you are getting a digital storybook album you will also be looking through a lot more prints. To determine how many prints are best suited for your needs think about how many prints you need for friends and family, think about how big your family is, and if you will be wanting enlargements to decorate your home.

Individual prints can seem expensive for what they are but you need to see things from the photographers' point of view. Individual prints that are made by hand can get pricey. Black and white pictures are always hand printed and that is why black and white prints are always more expensive. Images that have special effects require more attention when being printed so they too cost more. As a guide line, an 8×0 print should not cost more than $25 to $30 individually.

PICKING OUT YOUR ALBUM

Thanks to the scrapbook boom and digital age there are all sorts of wedding albums now available. The most traditional albums are those that either slip pictures into mattes or handmade album where the photographer mounts pictures on mats. You also now have digital albums that can be printed and bound like a hard back book. There is also the possibility to design your album your self.

Some photographers will also offer parents albums in their package. Parents' albums are smaller versions of the wedding album that you can give to parents as presents. Some packages may not even offer a album. This is good because it gives you a better idea of what size album you will want. If you can order your

album after the service you will be able to pick out every picture you want and will be able to have an exact idea of what you want in your album.

With so many album options around it is a good idea to shop around and see what you like. Most photographers have a account with one supplier and will only offer a selected variety of albums. Just because they only show you a few different album designs they will probably be able to get the album you want. So look around at different photographers and find out what album style you are most interested in and then tell your photographer.

It sure seems like a heck of a lot of web designers are also photographers, doesn’t it? And by “photographer”, I mean they own a DSLR and heavily consider aesthetics when taking a picture. Why the overlap of interests? Well clearly web design often incorporates photographs. Maybe we like to have the equipment we need to take decent pictures for websites and it grows from there. Maybe it’s because photography is a lot like design. You have a canvas of sorts and you need to take into account the principals of design: color, balance, line, shape, contrast… the gestalt.

I think maybe the connection runs a little deeper though, in that it appeals to our inner nerd in the same type of way.

CSS isn’t a particularly difficult language to understand. You select things, and change the values of different properties. There is no logic, no math, no object oriented concepts, no security concerns… It largely reads like plain English. Yet, understanding it and being really good at it are pretty far apart. The old adage applies nicely:

It takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master.

CSS might seem a little mystifying at first, until you dig in a little and then you might think “this is all there is?” I found photography to be similar. At first, a DSLR can seem like a maze of settings and details to know about. It seems like learning how to change everything according to the circumstances and your desired outcome is going to be incredibly complicated. Then the further you dig in, you realize it basically boils down to your ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Then it happens again, “this is all there is?”

It goes deeper in both directions. Yes, CSS can get more complicated with stuff like CSS3 transitions, cross-browser quirks, and trying to style form elements to look decent. Yes, photography can get more complicated with things like different lenses, dealing with white balance, and processing RAW. But those things are somewhat minor compared to the core concepts. Master those fundamentals, and the rest comes along with it over time.

Car photography is no easy task. Different techniques are used depending on whether they are prowling on the streets or stay put right before your lens. For amateur photographers, it takes great patience and a lot of practice before you can truly bring out the action and elegance in car photography. Panning shots is one of the most challenging things I’ve encountered while doing car photography. Choosing the background is important; the correct background can either gives your car a clear contrast or it can create significant dramatic effect. You don’t want to have a photo of your car blending into the complex city background or a sports car that looks stationary.

While it's not surprising that a Korean electronics firm would let Korean natives get the first crack at their latest line of wares, it's not without some small jealousy that we tell you the Samsung HMX-S16 camcorder is shipping in South Korea today. After all, it's not every day we see a sexy black number like this sporting solid state storage and streaming video over WiFi. Still, we'll only have time to be envious for a couple more sunrises. Amazon is already taking preorders for the flagship 64GB model, which it says will ship May 28th for $1,200, and you can get the very same 10 megapixel CMOS chip, 1080/60i recording and 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD in a cheaper $1,000, 32GB package — the HMX-S15 — if you can manage to hold off until June 4th.

Samsung's new 15.6″ P580 notebook has been designed to be the perfect IT companion for workers on the go or those looking for a high performing notebook for the home office. The P580 features a classic Samsung cutting edge design, packaged in a highly durable, tactile, sleek and lightweight chassis that makes remote or mobile working easy and pleasurable.

Graham Long, Vice President of Samsung's IT Business Division, said: “Business users expect practicality coupled with performance at a price that won't break the bank. Whether you're at home, in the office or on the go, the new notebook is the perfect business tool for those who want a first class PC experience.”

Landmark new features include next generation processor performance from Intel's new Core i3 Processor (Calpella), NVIDIA's latest GeForce GT Graphics processor and a stunning, non-gloss LED backlit LCD display. The P580 is also protected by heightened industry-standard security, making it the obvious choice for business users looking to gain a competitive edge.

Samsung's new P580 notebook is one of the most technologically advanced, competitively priced, professional notebooks on the market today. Featuring the new, super-fast Intel Calpella Platform with integrated Intel Core i5 Processor, Samsung's new notebook offers the kind of speed, performance and reliability usually found only on a desktop PC.

Most notable is the ease with which users can multi-task, allowing them to work across multiple applications simultaneously with no 'screen-freeze' or lag.

The model features market-leading NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics cards and a dedicated 1GB gDDR3 memory which, combined with the stunning LED backlit display, offer improved clarity and speed whilst conserving battery power.

The device comes with Windows® 7 Professionalas standard, offering all the benefits of Microsoft's latest OS such as 20 percent faster booting time and greater efficiencies in power and memory consumption; key considerations for mobile workers. Nanocell sound reduction technology ensures near-silent running at all times.

The Samsung P580 exhibits a stunning 'comfort-grip' chassis, featuring a stylish and modern-looking rubber paint which makes the device extremely hard-wearing and scratch-resistant. The device's good look is also resistant to shock damage as the chassis is protected by a free-fall sensor which freezes applications to protect the notebook if dropped.

The non-gloss HD LED backlit LCD display is easy on the eye. The Isolate Keyboard features 17-key, full-sized numeric keypads which make typing and calculating really easy.

Samsung's P580 notebook has been designed to give users the reassurance and peace-of-mind that its data will be protected wherever it is. The model features a host of security features including Phoenix FailSafe, a theft-deterrent service that offers users the ability to protect, track and manage their notebook, should it be stolen or lost. If data is compromised, users can retrieve and erase any critical material remotely – ensuring that thieves cannot view sensitive documents. Users are also able to secure their data with both BIOS and HDD passwords*.

Samsung's new notebook claims a number of new features which makes it a pleasure to use. Connecting to the Internet could not be easier as the device offers Wi-Fi or LAN, high speed USB 2.0 or eSATA connection, allowing users to share files quickly and easily. eSATA connectivity is supported by an external HDD, allowing the reading and writing of data at a speed of up to 3Gb per second, while enhanced Bluetooth 2.1 featuring Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) transmission makes paring of devices swift and easy.

The USB 2.0 port can also be used to charge other external devices such as mobile phones or MP3 players – even if the notebook is switched off – perfect for business travelers who need to charge devices whilst they rest.

The Samsung R480 notebook was introduced at CES as part of the Samsung R series of notebooks. These notebooks all share an easy to use island style keyboard, invisible mousepad and Intel Core processors. The 14″ Samsung R480 notebook is available at Best Buy for $679.

Samsung R480 Quick Specs:

The Samsung R480 has a 2.13GHz Intel Core i3-330M, 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 14″ display with a 1366×768 resolution and a 500GB hard drive. The R480 also has a Blu-Ray drive and Intel® GMA 4500MHD GPU.

Who is this Notebook for?

The Samsung R480 is a consumer notebook that would be a good fit for use at home or in a college classroom. Thanks to the beautiful red Crystal Wave design, this notebook could also make the transition from home to the office without looking out of place. It is 5.1 pounds which is about average for a 14″ notebook which is heavy enough that you won’t want to take it everywhere, but it will fit in a backpack for a weekend trip or to and from class.

Samsung R480 Video Overview: Take a tour around the Samsung R480 with Invisible Touchpad.

Display:

The 14 inch display on the Samsung R480 makes it easy to get work and enjoyable to watch a movie when traveling. The 1366×768 resolution provides enough space to get your work done and the screen tilts back far enough to be used in most situations. It is a glossy display, but like many that I have recently used, it is not too glossy. You still won’t want to use outside on a sunny day, but overhead lights or occasional outdoor use are fine.

Keyboard and mouse:

The keyboard on the Samsung R480 is really nice. The island style and great key placement really make the keyboard standout. This keyboard is almost as good as those found on the Lenovo Edge 13 and Edge 14 which I have reviewed, which says a lot. The keys have great spacing, a good amount of feedback and provide an overall good typing experience. If you need to do a lot of typing, this is one of the best consumer notebook keyboards I have used.

The mousepad on the R480 is what Samsung calls an invisible touchpad. This means the touchpad blends in with the palmrest area; its borders denoted with 4 Blue LEDs in the corners.  The mousing surface has a good feel to it that lets you know where it begins and the palmrest ends which isn’t prone to the sticking that some afflicts some trackpads. The mouse button is one long button with a center pivot which is OK, but two separate buttons would be better; especially if you like to use your thumbs to click while typing.

Battery:

The battery life of the Samsung R480 was disappointing in that it only achieved 2 hours under fairly normal use; Word, surfing the web, Tweetdeck and maybe a short YouTube video. I was able to get close to two and a half hours dimming the display a bit more but that’s still short by today’s standards. One thing I did like about the Samsung R480’s battery is that it has a built-in gauge to tell you how much battery life is left. This is very useful when you are grabbing a notebook and running out the door.

Video and Audio:

When it comes to enjoying yourself with the R480, the built in speakers and Blu-Ray drive will keep you entertained. The notebook handled both 720P and 1080P video files with ease though using the optical drive to watch a Blu-Ray disc does cut into the battery life.

The speakers on the Samsung R480 are better than expected and unlike many laptops don’t have a tinny sound. While you won’t be blown away by the bass and the middle is a bit muddy the speakers are still better than average and will get you through a movie or fill an office or hotel room with music.

Processing:

The R480 is powered by a 2010 Intel Core i3 processor and backed up by 4GB of DDR3 RAM which provides it enough power to meet the needs of even an above average user. During my month with the device I used it for everything from editing photos, typing posts, editing videos to upload to YouTube and calling on Skype; all of which the R480 handled without a problem. If this sounds like the way you use a notebook you won’t need to worry about the performance on the R480.

Unfortunately, if you are doing something that is processor intensive the Samsung R480 will warm up a bit. It isn’t too hot to hold or use, but warm enough to notice and warmer than I have seen on other Intel Core i3 notebooks.

Connectivity:

The Samsung R480 has plenty of ports to keep you connected.

Left (left to right): Power, Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, USB, USB, Microphone, Headphone

Right (left to right): Blu-Ray, USB, Kensington

The front also has a 3-in-1 card reader.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, the Samsung R480 is an average notebook that defines itself with a great keyboard and a Blu-Ray drive at an affordable price. You can find a cheaper Core i3 notebook with a Blu-Ray drive, but you’ll be hard pressed to find one with a Lenovo-like keyboard, style and extra touches like a battery meter. If you’re looking for a notebook that has these extras for a small price premium then the Samsung R480 should be on your list.

Pros:

  • Great keyboard
  • Style and extra touches like a battery meter

Cons:

  • Runs warm
  • Mediocre battery life

Samsung introduced its three high definition camcorders that use Solid State Drive (SSD) rather than hard drives.  People like SSDs better than HDDs in a number of ways, e.g. they are lighter and since they have no moving parts they use less power.  These qualities make the capturing of video easier.  The three camcorders come with three different storage capacities, the HMX-H104 with 16GB, HMX-H105 with 32GB, and HMX-H106 with 64GB.  Even though the SSD camcorders are suppose to be smaller than the traditional hard disk camcorders, all the three cameras are rather larger than card based camcorders.

Like the other Samsung camcorders, the HMX-H105 is an easy-to-use device.  It has a responsive touch screen and an intuitive menu structure.  Any person new to Samsung products will have no problem in finding the options and try out the manual controls.  The biggest plus point is that if you do not want to inconvenient yourself with manual controls, you may opt for the EasyQ mode and let the automatic adjustments do the task for you.  The H105 has an elegant and simple user interface.

The camcorder fits comfortably in your hand.  The buttons are well laid out and labeled clearly.  It has a swivel grip that adds to the comfort and ease of use.  You can hold the camcorder in either a pistol grip or a flashlight grip.  This makes it easy to shoot from difficult angles.  The device offers better stability, especially due to the zoom toggle and record buttons sitting on the LCD panel, which facilitate easy two-handed recording.  It is a portable device measuring at 59mm x 60.9mm x 128.6mm and weighing just 380g.  When compared to the R10 it may not seem very robust but still is resistant to dust, scratches, and breakage.  Its touch screen is a fingerprint magnet, but that is true for any touch screen model.  Since it has 32GB of memory, you may not want to carry extra media or be bothered about transferring the footage.  The battery sits in a cavity on the bottom of the camcorder, not giving you the option of upgrading to a larger size.  Battery life on SSD camcorder tends to be much longer than on hard drive, tape, or DVD camcorders.  It sports a standard 2.7-inch LCD that flips out at 90 degrees from the body and rotates up to 270 degrees.

The HMX-H105 has an auto mode, but no other special features come with it.  You may want to shoot with or without manual image adjustments.  It offers a few low light modes like Super C. Nite mode, off, normal, and super.  It also has a Night option in iScene.  Like others, the H105 also comes with an array of scene modes, called iScene; these include Auto, Night, Sports, Portrait, Spotlight, Beach and Snow, and Candlelight.  The zoom toggle on the copy is an exact copy of last year’s SC-HMX20.  A rather flimsy toggle does not allow for variable zoom speeds.  There is a secondary zoom option located on the LCD panel that you may use with the thumb of your left hand.

There are three focus methods – the automatic focus, which is usually sufficient, you may do a manual focus by using the touch screen scale, or use Samsung’s TouchPoint system.  This feature lets you touch the object that you want to focus on and the camcorder will automatically set focus on that object.  The best is the manual focus where you can use a joystick or lens ring to achieve the perfect focus.  The touch screen focus is not too good as it fills the screen with icons that block the image you want to focus.

Samsung camcorders are not the best choice for audio flexibility, and the H105 is no exception to this.  It has a stereo microphone situated on the bottom of the camcorder.  It does not have any headphone or microphone jacks.  The only other thing that the H105 has to offer is the Wind Cut feature.

Even if the H105 does not have a whole lot of connections, it definitely has the ports that most users may want to use.  A single connection takes care of both the Composite and Component video.  USB, HDMI, and DC power all sit in the same compartments.  It has a traditional system of thumbnail views that you select via the touch screen.  Play/pause, forward, rewind, etc. have touch screen controls, too.  For still photos, there is a separate playback screen.

When compared to HMX-R10, the H105 does not offer a large array of manual features and resolution options.  It offers separate modes for video and still modes, which you control by a button on the back of the camcorder.

The options of manual image adjustments available for videographers exist for still photography.  It has options like a 10-second self-timer and continuous shot, which are quite few as compared to once available on the R10.

Samsung offers an exclusive capability to do time lapse recording.  If you connect your camcorder to a power outlet, you could capture footage of over a few hours.  The camcorder offers Optical as well as digital image stabilization; the OIS is better than digital stabilization.  There are a good number of digital effects accommodated, they include black and white, sepia, negative, and art.  They will really help you give a nice touch to your videos.  You may also apply Faders to your video clips.  The ones available are black or white fade-ins and fade-outs.

The stand out point of the HMX-H105 is the SSD.  Finally, a Samsung camcorder that includes optical image stabilization and this addition may prove to work in their favor.  However, you cannot rely on this camcorder for still photography.  It also fails in the department of manual controls and audio features.  On the positive side, it is a sleek and easy-to-use device.  Going by the standards set by the previous camcorders, it is sure to deliver an excellent video quality.

A Comprehensive Review of the Popular Acer Aspire 5720-4649 15.4″ Laptop

The name Acer may not be familiar with many people but to me it usually means high quality at a great price. The Acer Aspire 5720-4649 is no exception. Because they don't spend the money on advertising the consumer reaps the benefit. I'm going to discuss what you can find on the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook, how it performs, and what type of notebook user this device caters to.

The Hardware:

Screen Size: 15.4″ LCD

Processor: 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 processor;

RAM: 1 GB (expandible to 2)

Storage: 160 GB

Optical drive: CD-R/RW combined dual layer DVD R/RW burner

Weight: 6 lbs

Graphics Card: Integrated Intel Graphics Accelerator X3100

Platform: Windows Vista Home Premium

Acer doesn't have a big time name like Sony, Apple, or HP but they have been around a while and if you know much about the technology industry they're not a new name to you. They've been around as long as I have been computing; in fact I remember when they were the first manufacturer to produce a black colored PC. Before Acer came along all PC's were that ugly gray color for the most part. So if you're concerned about the brand name, don't any more concerned than you would be with an HP, Sony or whatever Acer is established and make a quality product, this laptop is no exception.

The first thing you notice about this little budget priced notebook is how well built it is. It is extremely robust and the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 feels like a brick. Unfortunately it's about as heavy as a brick. But if you're not going to be treating your notebook with much respect then this is a good option for you, its robust. It also runs quite cool, meaning that you can leave it on and in sleep mode in its bag without concerning yourself with it burning up.

This Acer Aspire 5720-4649 notebook's display cranks away at a resolution of 1280 x 800. The CrystalBright display offers fairly good clarity with limited glaring. It is a little difficult to see in the direct sunlight. It gets a little washed out if you're using the laptop outside. Other than that it looks performs pretty standard.

The notebook is a little underpowered but if you limit your multitasking you won't be bothered too much by it. The integrated graphics card means you want be playing to many graphic intensive games however it performs fine for everyday tasks. You'll be able to watch plenty of movies, and play around with home videos to an extent. The hard drive at 160 GB is adequate for this notebook's price range. I did find however that 1 GB of ram is not enough. You'll need to expect to perform an upgrade if you want to do much at all. Windows Vista is a fairly intensive platform to be running and 1 GB of ram just isn't cutting it. Especially considering the integrated graphics card shares the on board ram as its Video ram. Alright enough about the hardware lets talk about the connectivity.

Connectivity:

4 2.0 USB inputs (you can use these for things like your iPod, printers, your digital camera as well as other things)

1 FireWire (This is for high speed downloading of digital video files from your digital camcorder)

Express Card

5 in 1 Media reader (This is for the little solid state memory cards that your Digital camera uses)

1 VGA out (this is for your standard monitor)

1 audio out / 1 mic

1 Ethernet jack

1 Modem jack

For the price range im surprised at the connectivity options. It has 4 USB ports which is 1 more than what I would consider standard. They're also well placed, sides and back. The firewire port is nice but I don't know if its really needed. With the integrated graphics card and single GB of ram I wouldn't expect to do much intensive video editing but it might be fun to play around with, just don't expect to do too much without some considerable lag. It is missing Bluetooth which I would like to see in any notebook but you can easily add this with a USB adaptor.

All together the Acer Aspire 5720-4649 available at under $600 is perfect for the all business notebook user or the notebook user on a budget. It would also be great for students that aren't interested in gaming, but mostly school work as well as the occasional movie, DVD burning session or CD burning session.

I was photographing in the last months – please tell me what they tell you:

"Auto-retrato com o poeta" by Paula Marina

It's one of the greatest tools available to photographers, it's easy to use, and yet it's among the least known and used abilities of a camera today. Pro photographers have used it for decades, but the amateur can use these same techniques without paying the professional price. It's called depth of field, and it's accessed through the use of the aperture.

The aperture, simply put, is the hole that light comes through in your camera. Light passes through the front of the lens, through a series of glass pieces, through a hole at the back of the lens, and into the camera. The aperture is the hole in the back of the lens, and you get to control this vital part of the camera, if you decide to want to bump up your pictures. You can place the camera on auto, and the camera will adjust its aperture, shutter and more to the situation it sees. By placing the camera in more manual modes, you take on powerful and personal control, and YOU get to decide what you want to create with your photographs.

An important factor here is lighting. Any photography relies heavily on the lighting that you are using, whether it be from the natural, ambient light around you, or artificial light, like a strobe or other flash unit. Especially while using natural light, it will be important to use a tripod to keep the camera steady while shooting. If you are shooting on a cloudy day, without much light, then the camera must compensate for less light by having a longer shutter speed, which it will do automatically in the mode I'll be explaining in a moment. A longer shutter speed means the camera won't be able to have a clearly focused picture without the use of the tripod.

Depth of field simply means the area of focus, or the area in the picture that is in focus might be a more accurate term. Photography is a two dimensional medium, having height and width, but it lacks depth, the third dimension. Your photography can create the illusion of that depth through a few easy camera settings. You may be asking yourself, why would I want to create the illusion of depth, and what is it good for? Part of the reason is to create a sense of emphasis. When you take a picture of a large area, with trees, birds, squirrels, people, rocks, etc, what is the thing or object that you are zeroing in on? Is there anything that you really want to emphasize to your viewer? If so, it's probably getting lost in the crowd of other things on the scene. The squirrels are so small you can barely see them, the people are walking their dogs, and the trees are swaying in the breeze. But what if you wanted to focus on the viewer on the flowers in the garden? When you create emphasis on an object, it strengthens your photo, and actually guides the eye of the viewer to that object. You could take pictures to create a story about that, as you can read in my article about photo stories. When you get in to take close-ups of the flowers is where the possibilities of great photography begin.

Emphasize the garden by focusing in on one or two flowers at a time. Grab a tripod, get down to eye level with them, and then get ready. Place your camera in a mode that allows you to change your aperture; the mode is usually called “A”, or “AV” on some models. Film cameras can allow these changes too, on SLR models. They require you to simply change the f-stop manually on the aperture ring. On your digital camera, use your selector buttons to change your aperture. You'll see on your digital camera, most likely, a letter f, with the number on the readout on either the monitor, or the info panel on the top of the camera, or perhaps both areas. The f means f-stop, which is the name commonly used to describe the number of the aperture setting. The best way to emphasize a flower is to have only that flower in focus, and to have the rest out of focus. Change your aperture to a really low number, such as 2.8, 4, or 5.6. When the lens is at a low number like this, the lens hole is wide open, but it is creating a small area or depth of field; basically an inch or two will be in focus. Focus your camera, and shoot. Now, look at the camera, and look at your pictures. The one or two flowers should be in focus, but do you see how the background is fuzzy and out of focus? This is what is called a “shallow depth of field”, and that comes from using a small number f-stop. That's because you've taken control of your camera, and changed the outcome! Because only the flower is in focus, and the rest is blurred out, you have guided your viewer to what YOU want to emphasize! You have used one of the most powerful tools available for a photographer to bring a new focus to your pictures. Try this with a lot of different scenes; look how the item is forced to really stand out for you because it's the only thing in focus.

Now, on the opposite end of the spectrum are the pictures that have the entire photograph in focus; such as a lighthouse standing out from the beach, with horseshoe crab shells in the immediate foreground. This is also done by changing the depth of field of your camera. Here, you again change your aperture, but this time place it on a high number like 16, 22, 28, etc. This is to create a large depth of field by using a small hole in the back of the lens. Again, you must use a tripod to keep the camera steady. Take a picture with something in the near foreground, such as a rock or the crab shells, and then compose your picture with a mountain or some other object some distance away, focus, and shoot. Remember to use the rule of thirds here for additional emphasis. As you'll see, both areas should be in focus, again showing the third dimension and creating the illusion of depth. This is a large depth of field.

It's a little known tool in the photographer's toolbox, but almost any camera made in the past four years will have some sort of ability to work with depth of field, whether they have a point and shoot or DSLR. Every photographer, of every level, has the ability, through practice, to create beautiful photographs that can rival those of the pros, by using the tools available with every camera. Use the strength of depth of field when you create the third dimension in your photographs, and add a new and incredibly
powerful personal dimension to your photography.

The BlackBerry 9800 got its most vivid picture yet through details from a new Chinese hands-on with the phone. Besides looking considerably better than in earlier photos, touchscreen slider is due to get 512MB of RAM and will definitely drop SurePress in favor of touch alone. Its processor isn't known but is likely to be faster to handle BlackBerry OS 6.0.

RIM's new design was already known to have a 5-megapixel camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, GPS and multi-touch input. It's already known to be headed to AT&T, but there weren't any signs with the latest scoop that the 9800 would reach T-Mobile or international carriers just yet. All major Canadian and European carriers are very likely targets. [via CrackBerry]

So jealous of your veggie garden. One of these days I'm gonna do some raised beds on my roof (although I'll have to find room first…)

I did plant an herb garden in the back yard of our cottage – my first foray into the real ground instead of containers. Will see when we go back up in a few weeks what the deer have left us.

Happy growing season!

Kalyn, your vegetable garden looks great! Apologies for the self-linkage, but I posted a "tour" of my garden last week! http://hungrybruno.blogspot.com/2010/05/garden-tour.html I only grow in containers, but I think it's doing pretty well. I'm growing 8-ball zucchini, too, I can't wait for them to fruit.

Hi Kalyn–your garden looks wonderful–I was VERY envious of your baby brandywine for a moment :D

I am growing Fortex green beans (pole haricots vert type–a must have for me every year), early golden wax and early contender bush beans, 5 kinds of zukes/summer squash. If you have the space for it to roam or a very LARGE trellis, I'd recommend trying a trombocino squash. They are rampant and productive, and visually very, very interesting. A light green summer squash that reminds me a lot of spaghetti squash or green butternut (eaten immaturely). Google them–they are amazing!

I am growing a variety of tomatoes–heirloom and non–including brandywines (my fav), cold set, mortgage lifter, and better boy.

I also have chard, chard, and more chard growing, peas, cabbage, and cauli, and a plethora of herbs.

Happy cooking–and gardening!

Your garden looks great this year Kalyn! I'm amazed by that tomato that's growing already!!

This year I planted yellow brandywine, black krim, cherokee purple, pineapple and green zebras. I also put in acorn and butternut squash, brussels sprouts, brocolli, swiss chard, jalapenos and yellow and purple bell peppers. Oh, and my asparagus is in its 3rd year of growth.

Someday I will learn to garden. Our little raised beds went in with high hopes but I've not gotten the whole green thumb thing figured out yet. You give me lots of hope that someday I can learn how to do this.

I think one problem is our soil. We might need some good organic fertilizer. And we put our seedlings out a little too early. But, we're learning and making adjustments.

You are so professional in your gardening! I have finally started on a very small scale because I honestly can't add big time vegetable gardening to the rest of my life right now so I stuck some plants in huge vases and now I have cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers and zucchini ( i hope, so far I have only seen a flower, male) thriving. Great fun so far!

I love hearing from other people who are growing gardens, whether it's a few plants in containers or all out garden space. I don't think anything can compare with the fun of growing your own food, either for taste or just the thrill of watching it grow.

I'm making notes of some of these plants you guys are trying for next year; keep 'em coming!

Really looking good, Kalyn! I'm so glad that not too many of your plants were destroyed by that late snowstorm. And, thanks for explaining your tomato. Otherwise, I was going to be totally amazed. Around here the grand goal is tomatoes by 4th of July with no greenhouse help, but I admit that's a wonderful idea! :-)

As I've shared before, we live in the woods and have mostly shade, but you and some other bloggers did inspire me to pick up some mint and basil and plant those. They are doing really well.

Love all the recipe links you always share. Looks like a terrific summer of fresh eating!

Thanks,
Shirlye
